The Motorsports Management Concentration at Belmont Abbey College will incorporate an in-depth and structured internship program that connects classroom learning with “real world” experience.

Motorsports as a specialized industry requires innovators, leaders, managers, and employees with a knowledge base and skill set particularly suited to the industry. The intensive internship component will provide students with the practical, hands-on experience that will make them highly desired and highly competitive in the growing Motorsports industry. Through the completion of three (3) internship blocks, interns will develop a wide web of personal and professional contacts that will assist with the pursuit of post-graduate employment.

Internships - Students:

Students in the Motorsports Management Concentration at Belmont Abbey College are required to:

  • Complete three (3) internships within the Motorsports industry  
  • Internships may be in as many as three separate sites, or as few as one. Students will have choice and flexibility in how to arrange their internships
  • Complete 120 on-site work hours per internship, for a total of 360 work hours.
  • Earn three (3) academic credits per internship; for a total of 9 academic credits (ratio is equal to 40 work hours per academic credit).

Three Internship Blocks:

Internships may be completed in one, two, or three of the following industry sectors:

Track Operations: Interns will learn the basics of track operations, administration, finance, event management, concessions, security, ticket sales, public relations & communications, and merchandising. Internship assignments may be either rotational through all departments or entirely within one department depending on faculty desire and the track’s needs and the intern’s abilities.

Race Teams: Interns will learn team operations including the basics of engineering, sponsorships, travel/event logistics, personality management, public relations, marketing, and finance. Internship assignments may be either rotational through all departments or entirely within one department depending on faculty desire and individual race team’s needs or the intern’s abilities.

Support: Interns will have the opportunity to work in one or more of the numerous support industries including: marketing firms, distributors, public relations agencies, and corporate sponsorship departments. This internship will allow students to target host employers in which they have the strongest desire.

Internships – Academics:
Upon completion of MS 201  120 work hours 3 credits
Upon completion of MS 301 120 work hours 3 credits
Senior Year  120 work hours 3 credits
     
Total – 360 Hours 9 credits

Internships are to be completed in a designated rotation, in accordance with MSM classes:

Internship Block 1 – Summer or Fall following completion of MS 201

Internship Block 2 – Spring or Summer following completion of MS 301

Internship Block 3 – Semester before or during graduation

Students enrolled in the Motorsports Management Concentration and undertaking their internship components will be required to follow and successfully complete the following academic requirements:

  1. Internship Contract: Students are required to complete an Internship Contract with each host organization. Contract for is provided by BAC and consists of intern and supervisor contact information; an agreed upon internship description; the number of hours needed for completion; and signed by all parties involved, including Belmont Abbey College.
  2. Reflection Papers: Students will be required to write two Reflection Paper(s) that focus on their experience and how it relates to their career development within the Motorsports industry.
  3. Work Hours Log: Students maintain a running Work Hours Log, verified and signed by their internship supervisor.
  4. Online Surveys: Students are required to complete two online surveys – one by the student and one by their Internship Supervisor.

These academic requirements tie the experiential component back into the academic classroom learning.

Securing Internships

Internships are managed through a process called competitive bid. Students must apply for internships via resume/cover letter and/or application submission, interviews, and acceptance of offers.

Internship leads and postings will be provided by The Office of Career Services & Internships via email. Students will apply for internships according to posted procedures.

Students are strongly encouraged to seek out their own internship opportunities through personal contacts and by directly submitting resumes/cover letters and/or applications to organizations in the industry.
